[ficlet] Only Human

Since no one was willing to torture me, I decided to write something that positively tortured me. Writing anything related to Guts/Casca and post- Eclipse tears me up D: I'm not expecting comments for this really because ._. I really just wanted to write something for Berserk.

Disclaimer: I don't own a thing.

Word Count: 273

Warning(s): Angst, unspectacular writing? Self-edited.

Summary: Even if Guts is strong, he's merely human, too. Gen-fic, but also unapologetically Guts/Casca.

...

Even now, Guts catches himself staring at her as if he's seen Casca for the first time. And when he closes his eyes, Guts can nearly make all those years drift away and find himself in the past again -

(when Casca was still here, when the Band of Hawks was still running strong and not a perverted imitation of what it had once been).

But it's transient; the magic quickly fades away and, he's brought back to reality, Guts traces his hand over his metallic arm and remembers that one of his eyes will remain forever closed. And, of course, he has been branded – forever branded (a cruel memento, linking him forever to Griffith).

Guts is nearly unwilling to open his eye because the awakening is cruel and, even if he's strong and a slayer of apostles, he's human, too.

And it's only human to long for what's no longer there -

(In his mind, Casca is staring at him, challenging him as always – her eyes fierce and full of determination to prove herself worthy)

Yet, he opens his eye and beholds Casca the way she is now: hair longer, eyes wide and innocent. She's laughing – but not with him or because of him.

For a second, Guts feels that familiar heaviness settle over him again; it costs Guts all his self-resolve for it not to take control over him. But Guts can't fight off everything because one simple truth remains -

(He misses Casca, he loves Casca, he needs Casca).

But Guts can only look at her from afar – for now, at least.

...

ETA:

One of the most beautiful things about Berserk for me is just how much Guts loves Casca. It's hurting him a lot, but he still protects and cherishes her. And - she's the one thing that keeps him from losing his mind altogether.

Yes, I analyse this series too much ._.
